Healthy homemade pear dessert

Post image for Healthy homemade pear dessert

I received a request for a pear sorbet. I love pears so I try to keep them handy and I also love to make healthy homemade desserts from fruit. Pears  have properties that prevent weight gain and fight disease due to their flavonoid content. My resulting recipe turned into creamy, yummy pear goodness in the form of a popsicle.

I started with a frozen pear. If I bite into a piece of fruit and the texture is not right (too mushy, for example), I will stick it into the freezer. Any fruit. I make no distinctions. They are all fit for the freezer. Frozen fruit becomes a healthy homemade sorbet.

Turn fruit into a healthy homemade dessert

Here is my recipe for a healthy homemade pear dessert. Fruit has more healthy compounds when it is ripe. Make sure your fruit is ripe before eating to get the  most benefits (and the most flavor!).

Healthy, Homemade Cinnamon Pear Sorbet

2 ripe pears (frozen, but I had one frozen and one not)

1/2 cup of non-dairy milk (I used unsweetened soy kefir)

2 dates (the big squishy kind – great source of antioxidants and minerals and yummy sweetness)

1/4 tsp cinnamon (good on the blood sugar and because I like it)

Blend dates with milk in food processor or blender (Vitamix gets it totally blended). Then add frozen pears and blend til sorbet consistency.

If I had started with 2 frozen pears, I could have gotten to sorbet consistency. But I had one frozen and one refrigerated so there was too much liquid and it sped right into soup consistency.  So into the handy popsicle maker, and 5 minutes later, yummy, creamy healthy homemade pear dessert pops!

Other enhancements

I would add toasted walnuts as a topping for a sorbet or as a crunchy surprise before freezing the pops. Other toasted nuts would be a great addition.
Makes 5 pops (about 1/3 cup per pop)
